Big News

So basically that's why I've been MIA lately.  I was about 10 weeks along at the beginning of December and I thought I was going to make it through my first trimester without any symptoms, but then I just got slammed with nausea, heartburn, and exhaustion.  Anything that wasn't essential to daily life went out the window.  No Christmas tree, no advent calendar with cutesy activities, no baking (definitely no baking), and no decorating or household projects.  Thank goodness Little Man is not even two yet and won't remember the Christmas that Mommy ruined!

I'm still experiencing some sluggishness and food aversions, but now that I'm 14 weeks, I think I can feel them starting to go away and I'm ready to get back into the swing of things!

How did some of you mamas deal with pregnancy, a small child, and everyday life?  Also, any tips on having an infant and a toddler would be welcome.  I'm so thankful and very excited, but I am kind of nervous about learning how to take care of a newborn and a toddler at the same time.  I'd love to hear what you have to say!

  3. Congratulations!

I have a 3 year old and am currently 24 (or 25? I can't keep track!) weeks pregnant. At first I had a lot of guilt about not getting things done but I've finally found peace with the fact that I can't have everything perfect and that I'll catch up when I'm feeling better. We'll see how things are when the new baby comes and I'll have two to take care of. Luckily, my 3 year old is very excited and in the "helpful" stage!

    Congrats again!

  4. Chewing gum always helped me with nausea. I have a 22 month old and a 2.5 month old. The transition from 1 to 2 is WAY easier than 0 to 1. Honestly, the thing that helps me the most is getting myself and the boys completely dressed and ready to go for the day before we do anything else. It makes me a lot more productive!~

  6. Whoa, that IS big news! Congrats! Mine are two years apart (6 and 4) and can I just say, two kids is WAAAY more than double the work of one! lol

The first year is definitely the hardest - mostly adjusting to having to be two places at once and not being able to give the first one ALL of your attention like before. But, of course, it's totally worth it. Mine fight with each other, as all siblings do, but they play together really well too. I'm sure each stage has it's own ups and downs. My oldest is in kindergarten now, so it's the first time my daughter has had Mommy all to herself during the day, which is pretty cool. Although, that's about to end. Baby number 3 will be here in about three weeks. Ahhhhhh!!!!! I'm sure I'll be wonderin' why I thought two was so much work!!! lol
Hope your pregnancy goes well. Congratulations again!

  8. Congratulations!!! That's so exciting!! When you get those tips you're asking for pass them my way ((no don't need them yet)) but in the next year hopefully will and I cannot imagine being as tired as I was in the first pregnancy w/ a toddler running around.
You're amazing though and you already do it all so I imagine you'll do perfectly at this!

    Congrats again!

  10. A doula told me that newborns release some kind of chemical intoxicant during their first hour of outside life. It's to hook mommy on them... like we need help with that ;)
Anyway this lady told me to get my two and a half year old in the room asap. Obviously you don't want them in there while you're getting stitched but you get my drift. If you share a little of that first bewitching hour with your toddler he will be in love!!! I can't say that is THE reason mine loves his brother but in the week and a half that #2 has been around #1 has been an angel to him! And it can't hurt right?

  11. Congrats!!! With both my boys I got very sick for almost the whole pregnancy - the first I was teaching school and the second pregnancy I had a 2 1/2 year old at home! Not fun - I totally feel you there. Those holidays just go right out the window...and at 2 he *definately* won't care or remember!

As for how to make it through as a mom of a toddler and newborn - - two words: MOTHER'S HELPER. I cannot emphasize this enough. I was having a hard time the first 6 months with my second baby boy when it dawned on me to find some hired help. I found a responsible girl at our church and paid her a little bit to come over once a week for a few hours. She would help me clean or entertain the kids so I could clean/shower/nap - WHATEVER. Those few hours a week were heaven sent. I highly reccommend you find a local neighbor girl you can hire to help you - well worth the money, though you may not have to pay her as much as a babysitter since you'll be there too (unless you also want to use her as a babysitter once in awhile!) I wish I had done it sooner than 6 months in and if/when with the next baby, I will get a mother's helper ASAP!

Good luck and hope you feel better very soon!

  12. Hi! I just found your blog (searching for ideas on Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday parties!) and am loving it...especially because I noticed you live in the Raleigh area just like me! My second child is 7 1/2 months old and my first just turned four, and while the baby stuff was easier the second time around, trying to wrangle cooking and cleaning and two kids has been exhausting and a huge challenge, as my older one doesn't nap and has sleep issues at night on top of it. I worked full-time until #2 was born, so suddenly becoming a stay-at-home mom was really hard for me and for my daughter, who was used to being around other people frequently and thrives on the company of other children. ANYHOW, don't try to be Superwoman...I did that and it does nobody any good. I learned that my family needs sane mommy more than they need the house vacuumed. ;o) Take care and good luck, I look forward to checking out more on your blog!

  14. Congrats to you and the hubby! I had my daughter when my son was 19 months old, and as challenging as it was, they are now getting to be best friends. I'm a SAHM, too, so when I wasn't feeling well while pregnant, I would just lay on the floor wherever my son was playing. I wanted to be there with him, but I couldn't always be the best mom. I'm ok with that. Just do your best and everyone will be fine : )
