Kid Sized Modern Chairs

via west elm, pb kids, target
Yesterday, in my little Kid's Table DIY/Makeover Roundup, I mentioned that this post had inspired me to use modern style chairs for my boys' table and chair set in their future playroom.  The chairs pictured above are the most affordable ones I came across.

Keep reading or just scroll a tiny bit to see which ones I ended up getting...

The inspiration chairs were actually the set of Target chairs (pictured above) and they were originally $60 for a set.  That seemed a little high to me, plus I didn't really want to use white chairs, and I would have ended up painting them, so I searched a couple other places to find something similar and hopefully in a color I wanted.

I never, ever would have thought that I would have found a decently priced modern-ish chair at PB Kids.....and in exactly the color I wanted.  I think my jaw literally dropped when I walked in the store and saw them.  AND due to some gift cards and coupons (which is why I even bothered to look there and West Elm in the first place) I was able to get two chairs for $50!

I picked up my chairs yesterday and then came home and started looking up links for this post when I realized that the Target chairs were a good $20 less than the ones that I had just bought.  Doh!  I considered returning the PB Kids chairs, but then realized that between shipping and painting the white Target chairs I probably would have ended up spending $50 on them anyway.

Those Target chairs are a fantastic deal, but Little Man is already enjoying his!

Tentative Playroom Plans

Here are the tentative plans for my boys' playroom.  Because we are having our second boy I didn't really see the need to switch up all of the decor completely, so I'm using the same color scheme that's in the nursery and I'll be re-using some old pieces.  Some of the items above will also be DIY projects.  For instance, the two pillows are available to buy, but I will probably be making my own.  Same goes for the prints I'll be using in the room.  The toddler bed and the children's table are also just ideas of what I'd like to have.  The toddler bed is from Ikea and it's an odd size, so you have to buy one of their mattresses, plus the crib skirt I already own won't work on it.  The children's table and chairs set is over $120 (that seems to be pretty standard as far as children's furniture goes), so I'd like to be able to find something on Craigslist.

Sources:
1.  K-Mart Pillow
2.  PB Teen Pillow
3.  Bed skirt No longer Available
4.  Ritva Curtains w/ Brown Chevron at the bottom
5.  Ikea Gulliver Toddler Bed
6.  Amazon Gift Mark Children's Table
7.  Ikea Expedit Unit
8.  Target Baskets
9.  Etsy Print
10.  Garnet Hill Crib Sheet

Now all I have to do to get started is clear the room out, paint it, and make a 3 hour trip to Ikea.  Less than three months left!

Space-y Nursery

This nursery has been in the works since December of 2009.  Given that amount of time I should have been able to decorate a nursery worthy of Mariah Carey's twins.  I'm sure she would not approve of my little 9x12 space, but I'm much happier with it now than before.
Here's a little reminder:
OK.  This picture is particularly bad, but you can see that there were big changes made just with some paint and accessories.

The big items had to stay.  As much as I love vintage-modern style cribs and mis-matchy dressers now, I didn't know that I loved them when I bought my furniture.  I also kind of bought them because my due date was getting close and I needed something.   I think I was able to bring a tiny bit of the vintage-modern style in with they pennant banner and vintage-looking space prints in the gallery wall.
You may remember this post...well....I decided not to paint my chair.  Now that the walls are lightened up, it doesn't seem like it needs it so bad.  I'll just keep the cream slip cover I bought to go in the next baby's nursery (possibly still years away).

The changing pad cover and crib sheet I got is from the Dwell Studio for Target Space Baby line.  I made the pillow in the chair and pennant banner from the curtain panel that belongs to the set.

This is the little corner next to the crib.  These are the only "toys" that stay out and visible in the room.  Everything else is stored in the closet.
My little solar system mobile came from PB Kids.  I wish I could say that I made it myself, but it was $40 and I don't think I could have created one for significantly less than that.
My husband actually picked out the lamp on the changing table.  It's from Ikea and I think it was $20.

Since we already had all the big ticket items and most of the accessories, my nursery change-up didn't end up costing a ton of money.

Here's the rundown:
-Striped Curtains: $40
-White Paint: $20
-Pennant Banner: $9
-Birth Stats Print: $6

$75 for a whole new look!

Like always, I'll probably continue to add little things to the room over time.  I really want to re-cover a bean bag chair using this tutorial to put by the book racks. I'm also still considering putting something on the walls on either side of the crib.

I'll keep the blog updated with any changes I make!

My pennant banner is done.  Now I just have to get moving on my gallery wall.  These pictures certainly give me motivation to get it finished.

Happy almost Friday!

Boy Nurseries Are Difficult

I'm having a hard time with my son's nursery change-up.  Right now it's a disaster area and completely unusable.  All he can do is sleep in there.  I have to do something about it soon.  Like, this weekend soon.  I'm still not totally sure what it is though.

Maybe one day I'll have a girl and she'll have a pretty room like one of these.  Girls' rooms just seem to be so much easier to decorate.

This one's been floating around Pinterest lately.  via

Any boy nursery inspiration you'd like to share?  Are girls' rooms really easier?  I'd love to know!

Y'all have a good weekend!

No-Sew Striped Curtains

I'm finally finished with these curtains!  I got one panel finished about a week and a half ago and I put the second one off because (like always) the first one took longer than I thought it would (I'm also a pretty big procrastinator).

These babies are phase one of my nursery switcheroo.  (I just started, so that's why there's art still hanging behind the curtains.)  I made the curtains to fix the window mistreatment situation that was going on in my son's room.  Before I hung these panels I had a hideous tan, black-out curtain on a tension rod.  It was always meant to be temporary, but it ended up staying in the room for way too long.  Since we still needed the windows to be darkened, I attached the black-out curtain to the back of one of my new panels.

I hope no one is looking for an in-depth tutorial because I made a big oops.  I could have sworn that I took how-to pictures when I made the first panel, but as it turns out, I didn't.  Of course I didn't realize this until I was completely finished with the second panel!

Oh well, it's not that big of a deal.  If you want to create striped curtains without busting out your sewing machine simply cut strips of fabric and attach them to a curtain panel with Heat n' Bond or Stitch Witchery.  My stripes are 10 inches and I used a yardstick to keep them even when I creased the edges with an iron so the raw edges wouldn't show.  It's that easy.

I used a $20 pair of 98" Rivta curtains from Ikea, a $10 black-out panel (that I already owned), a $5 navy flat sheet from Wal-Mart for my stripes,  and 3 rolls of Stitch Witchery.  All in all these curtains cost about 40 bucks.

Although I declared that I was finished with these curtains at the beginning of this post, I actually have one more thing to do:  baby proof them.  I bought two packs of curtain ring clips for these panels, but I could only find one of them when it came time to hang them.  Since I needed to take pictures I just went ahead and hung them through the tabs.  The rings are great because if Little Man decides to pull on them, only the curtain will come down instead of the rod and hardware.

I snapped this picture just minutes after I hung them up.  I'm off to find those rings!
